Reading Comprehension: Understanding What the Question Is Really Asking

At Reading Ranch, we often remind students that reading is more than simply saying the words correctly. While strong decoding skills are essential, the ultimate goal of reading is comprehension: understanding, thinking about, and learning from what they read.

As children progress through their reading journey, they naturally move through stages of development. First comes decoding, or accurately reading words, followed by fluency, or reading smoothly and automatically, and then comprehension.

When children no longer have to spend all of their energy figuring out words, their brains are free to focus on meaning.

Understanding the Question

One of the most important comprehension skills we teach at Reading Ranch is understanding what the question is actually asking.

We teach students to:

• Slow down before answering.
• Identify keywords in the question.
• Think carefully about what information is being requested.
• Return to the text for evidence when needed.

Our Discussion-Based Approach

Reading Ranch uses a highly interactive, discussion-based approach to comprehension instruction. Rather than simply providing answers, our instructors guide students through meaningful conversations about the text.

Some of the questions we frequently ask include:

• “What evidence helped you arrive at that answer?”
• “Can you show me where you found that information?”
• “What clues did the author provide?”
• “How do you know?”

These guided discussions help students become active readers who think critically about what they read.

When to Be Concerned

Remember, comprehension difficulties are not always a sign that a child cannot understand what they read. Sometimes, children simply need additional practice analyzing questions and organizing their thoughts before responding.

However, if your child is still struggling to decode words accurately and fluently, comprehension may naturally be impacted because so much mental energy is being devoted to word reading.
